Category: Let's talk
this morning on the radio they interviewed a woman who had apprehended two men who were stealing property from her garden shed. she drove her car in front of the truck they were using to stop them, and then got out of the car and confronted them. When asked if she'd had any doubts about confronting these people, she said that she hadn't really even thought about it. So the question is this, if you were mugged, or if someone stole something from you, would you fight back? i've always maintained that I have nothing that is worth me or my child or dog getting hurt over, so ... would you be a hero?
I've always believed I'd stand and fight, but don't really know if that's just a bit of male brevado. I guess we never know until the time comes. I hope it never will.
I've wondered about that actually. I think I would but I also think that me doing it is more akin to stupidity than heroism. I just have a very strong sense sometimes for self preservation and if someone is trying to rob me of something it really enduces a very strong response from me and sometimes not a very well thought out one. I remember my freshman year at college I was drinking champagne outside right before my 21st birthday. Someone stopped me and told me I better give that bottle to him. I was very offended and drank the rest of the bottle more or less until my friend pointed out this was a police man and I wasn't allowed to drink, let alone in a public space. I didn't even thik of it at the time but he could have got me into major trouble and I should've at least asked why he wanted the bottle in the first place. That's the nearest I've come to robbery so far (knock on wood) but I think my reactions then were a bit stupid but I can't say I wouldn't do the same thing today. My immediate reactionis always to fight for what I have and don't just give it up, whatever it is.
Cheers

I absolutely refuse to fight what do we gain by killing others..what of the subliminal psychological effects, I.E Post Traumatic Stress Disorder..ect..after all being chased by a big Goth, swinging a replica Scottish broadsword, would be enough to put anyone off. smile
well no one said anything about killing anyone so yet again goblin has missed the point ...
I'd like to think I would. But really it comes down to if and when it happens, touch would it won't. but you never really can know the answer to that really until it happens. I just hope I never have to find out because i'd rather not know.
I would only fight if I had the means to match my apponents. In the situation described in post 1, I'd fight the burglers unless they had weapons that I couldn't match. I would have to conceed defeat to them though if they had weapons which made them superior to me, in that case I'd let the law deal with them instead. What Tony Martin did in that situation was definitely right. I'd do the same or aim to if I had the means.
WW .Your 1st stament is ludicrous unless you expect every opponent to be specifically chosen for you..where do you think you are a pre-arranged boxing match..every time you open your mouth we are treated to more inane babble...you should change your name to Gollum.
or indeed, goblin! *grin*
actually I do have to support tony martain. If those brats weren't there then it wouldn't have happened.
LV I agree.Tony Martin was provoked on numerous occasions and did the police turn up ..NO...In Glasgow you are wasting your time calling the police and/or reporting criminal activity..........
The police either fail to attend, or turn up, after the thugs have had their drink/drug fuelled fun.. I have witnessed a group of burly policemen, sitting in their nice warm van, content to watch while a teenager was beaten unconscious. The thugs and neds rule Glasgow day and night..So I say strip the do gooders of their nauseating powers and sentence these thugs to 10 years in the Foreign Legion, where they will learn the meaning of discipline.
